The University of Texas at Austin is making it a little more challenging for Texas high school students to get into the flagship university, lowering its automatic admission threshold from top 6 percent to top 5 percent of their graduating class starting in the fall 2026 semester.

The current threshold is 6%. The change comes after the university received a record-breaking 73,000 undergraduate applications for this fall.

Currently, Texas students who rank in the top 6% of their high school graduating class are automatically admitted to UT's flagship university. Students applying for the fall 2026 semester will need to be in the top 5%.
